Equipment
Let’s go through all the equipment, besides the actual saxophone, you will need to play. Here is what’s in my sax case.
1.
Reeds- you won’t be able to play if you don’t have reeds. They come in many different styles and strengths. If you don’t have any experience with choosing your reed, I would recommend a 2 ½ to start. For brand, I would recommend Vandoren.
2.
Reed case- A reed case, while not necessary, is a very useful accessory. This model holds up to 10 reeds (5 on the reverse side), and keeps them from warping and helps me keep track of which reed is which.
3.
Neck strap- the neck strap goes around your neck, and clips onto the neck strap loop on the saxophone. The neck strap provides an additional balance point, and helps comfortably distribute the weight of the horn.
4.
Cork Grease- apply a thin, even coating of cork grease to the neck cork before putting on the mouthpiece. This prevents any damage to the cork.
5.
Tuner- helps you keep in tune, of course! This model allows you to choose what key you’re in, which is convenient with a transposing instrument like the saxophone.
6.
Metronome- the metronome is a device that lets you set the tempo, in BPM (beats per minute). Very useful!
7.
Pencil- While not necessary for playing, it is always a good idea to keep a pencil with you. During rehearsals or just individual practice, you will often times have to make notes in your music.
8.
Soft Cloth- important for instrument care, the soft cloth is used to wipe down the horn after playing.
